Smart Sanitation Monitoring System for Chennai Smart City: A Case Study

Chennai Smart City deployed MYRFID’s IoT-powered Smart Sanitation Monitoring System
to digitize waste bin tracking, optimize cleaning staff attendance, and improve service
accountability across 15 strategic urban zones.

Optimized Sanitation Monitoring and Improved Civic Efficiency in Chennai

Client: Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC)
Location: Chennai
Industry: Smart City / Urban Governance
Project: IoT-based Smart Sanitation Monitoring System
Solution Provider: MyRFID

As part of the Smart City initiative, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) aimed to modernize its sanitation system to improve urban cleanliness and ensure citizen well-being. The need was for a robust, real-time sanitation monitoring system that could track toilet usage, monitor hygiene, and detect issues proactively.

To fulfill this, MyRFID designed and implemented an IoT-enabled Smart Sanitation Monitoring System, integrating RFID-based asset tracking, sensor-based feedback mechanisms, and a centralized dashboard.

Project Scope

  • Digitize and monitor the status of public toilets.

  • Improve accountability of maintenance staff.

  • Enable real-time alerts and data for decision-makers.

  • Ensure better hygiene and timely cleaning services.

📌 Project Highlights

📍 Coverage: 282 toilet units across Chennai

🔗 Integration: Unified dashboard connected with sanitation departments

🔄 Automation: Alerts, cleaning validations, and MIS reports

🧑‍💼 User Roles: Admin, supervisor, and field worker roles defined within the platform

Solution Implemented

  • The Smart Sanitation solution included the following key components:

    🧼 1. IoT-enabled Sanitation Sensors

    • Deployed sensors to monitor toilet usage, water level, and waste bin status.

    • Automated data capture for cleanliness frequency.

    📲 2. QR Code & RFID-based Cleaning Validation

    • Each toilet was tagged with a unique QR code.

    • Sanitation staff used RFID-enabled devices to scan the QR code during cleaning.

    • Timestamp and staff ID were recorded for accountability.

    📊 3. Central Monitoring Dashboard

    • Real-time data visualization of toilet status, cleaning frequency, and service requests.

    • Alerts for missed cleaning schedules or service breakdowns.

    • Geo-mapped dashboards for better supervision.

💬 4. Feedback Interface for Citizens

    • Citizens could scan a QR code to register complaints or feedback.

    • Feedback was directly integrated into the backend system.

Outcomes

Increased Transparency: Every sanitation task was tracked and validated digitally.
Real-Time Monitoring: Enabled data-driven decisions by GCC officials.
Improved Hygiene Levels: Reduced cleaning gaps and optimized cleaning schedules.
Citizen Engagement: Allowed real-time feedback from users, improving satisfaction.
